Theatre Projects Manitoba was founded in 1990. With a passionate faith in the regions’ playwrights, and close ties to the Manitoba Association of Playwrights, founding Artistic Director Harry Rintoul set out to create opportunities for local artists to take risks and try new things. Since 1990, Theatre Projects has premiered more than 40 works by local playwrights, and given important early experience to scores of designers, actors and other professionals. We have premiered the work of many writers who have since gained national and international reputations such as Rick Chafe, Brian Drader, Yvette Nolan, Ellen Peterson, Tricia Cooper and Vern Thiessen.
We are the risk takers. Still the leading producer of Manitoba plays, we gamble on new work and are constantly providing development support for established and emerging writers. We share with our audience the voices of our own storytellers. We also introduce them to contemporary voices from across the country that resonate deeply with our distinct culture and its current concerns. We are committed to exploring our community’s diversity by providing a stage for Métis and First Nations Playwrights. We select venues to suit the artistic needs of the play and challenge our audiences to embrace new theatrical experiences. Theatre Projects continues to tread the edge artistically on behalf of artists and audiences, and to cultivate the talents of the region’s theatre artists, technicians, and craftspeople.
