Story Theatre Company has been touring Canada since 1981 with its distinctive style. The Story Theatre style was developed by Paul Sills in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and founder Jim Leard brought this technique to his company. The style incorporates commedia del arte, vaudeville, music, Brechtian ‘dialectical theatre’, story telling, and audience participation and it utilizes traditional tales and stories to explore contemporary ideas in an accessible manner.
Under new Artistic Director David MacPherson, who was mentored under Jim, the company has expanded its practice to embrace inclusionary processes, and a more diverse cannon of stories. (The original Story Theatre style used mainly Aesop’s Fables and Western Fairy Tales). In developing these new stories the company works with diverse artists and communities to ensure a sensitive and respectful sharing of the tales from different perspectives and voices.

Story Theatre is a fully professional theatre company that is part of National, Provincial and Community professional associations and abides by all relevant labour practices.

Current Season:

On tour  in 2017/2018 year we are be doing a presentation of a work commissioned by us. Erin MacKlem, an Alumni of the company and Designer of previous touring show will be venturing into play writing for us with her play Blue Beads & Blue Berries. This play is an adaptation by Erin of the traditional tale Cap ‘o Rushes which is the historical root story for both Cinderella and King Lear among others. Erin, who is a Metis artist, is exploring this through a Metis Cultural lens.

Our second touring show is Rhymes, Reason & Rascals. This is a story about Genghis Khan and how he discovered the value of wisdom. The script brings stories together from the frontiers of Genghis’ empire which help him understand how to be a better king.

More recently the company has been working with Denise Read, a professional Deaf performer, film-maker and story teller to incorporate American Sign Language into each production. This is done as a method of creating a more accessible show, to be more inclusive and to celebrate Deaf Culture and ASL as a language.

  • Description of work:

Now more than ever it is vital to ignite children’s imaginations; to help them to unplug, to dream, to create, to imagine. Since 1981, Story Theatre has been bringing relevant, vibrant, educational theatre to elementary school audiences and their families across Canada. Through our use of simple costumes, sets, and props we invite our audiences to express themselves both creatively and socially. Our mandate has always been to produce theatre that involves the audience in stories and allows  them to experience words come to life through action. Story Theatre is the antidote to technology. The Story Theatre style is interactive, and as the stories, games, and music unfold, the audience is invited to be part of the imaginative experience.  We give children the tools and the  ability to express themselves in creative ways and encourage them to explore the world of imagination.

“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you anywhere”.  – Albert Einstein
