actOUT! Kitchener-Waterloo Children’s Drama Workshop

Producing theatre by and for children of the Waterloo Region of Ontario, actOUT! is a board driven registered charity serving children 5-18.

ActOUT! was founded in 1995 as the KW Children's Drama Workshop in the Waterloo Region of Ontario, Canada by Leslie Gail Hill. Ms. Hill retired as Artistic Director in 2009. From 2009-2016 the organization was managed under the direction of Ms. Deanne Bingleman. In 2017, Todd Vercoe took over the reigns as Artistic Director.

Formed to promote and educate the public's appreciation of the talents and abilities of children in the dramatic arts by providing children's drama workshops culminating in live performances in the Kitchener-Waterloo Region. A creative home and theatre training centre for young bodies, minds and spirits, actOUT! has grown from serving a handful of students to over 500 a year.

ActOUT! productions was formed for aspiring and skilled actors 5-17 years of age. The company evolved to allow skilled, talented and developing young actors opportunities to perform in professional quality productions.  ActOUT! has now staged over 60 productions.

Current Season:

In summer 2018 we were honoured to be invited to supervise the official children's musical theatre camp at the Elora Festival producing a staging of the classic Willy Wonka KIDS at the Elora Centre for the Arts.

The coming 2018-2019 season will continue our excellence in theatrical training for young minds and bodies.

Our Winter Musical this year will bring a school edition staging of the classic Les Misérables at the Registry Theatre in Kitchener. December 12-15, 2018

Our spring musicals will feature the mini-kids (Ages 6-10) of Disney's AristoCats KIDS a playlet to be performed at the Kitchener Waterloo Little Theatre April 8-9, 2019.

The musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr. will walk the boards of the Cambridge Arts Theatre June 4-8, 2019

The former 'Senior Intensive' has been re-branded as 'Advanced Actors' this season and will feature 12 Angry Jurors at the Kitchener Waterloo Little Theatre February 27-March 2, 2019

ActOUT!’s continues the success of last season's Shakespeare-in-the-park: A Midsummer Night’s Dream this year with The Tragedy of Macbeth to be performed May 15-18, 2019 at the Waterloo Park Bandshell.

Now in it's tenth season our March Break Drama Camp, Scene it on Stage X, will be a draw for students looking to tune their performing chops. And we will reprise our Summer drama and theatrical camps again in the summer of 2019. Perhaps with a new summertime twist. Look for more news early in the new year for details.

First and foremost, actOUT! is a teaching theatre. We maximize stage time for the performers by providing opportunities to portray multiple roles.

We double-cast our shows giving greater opportunity to the company. What this means is that from our company of actors we will create two different castings of the show. This gives us an opportunity for performers to play multiple roles in a production to encourage them to learn. Each version of the play will perform several times in production weeks.

The actOUT! double-casting system also allows each actor to have a partner playing the same role to compare notes, to assist in lines to assist in development etc. Peer mentorship is a foundation of the actOUT! rehearsal culture.

While we need to stage familiar titles for children, we have tried to stretch with our own adaptations of Shakespeare, Lewis Carrol, Alexandre Dumas, and others.
